Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila is said to be safe in Windhoek where she was taken on Sunday, after she survived an accident on the B1 road outside Otjiwarongo.
The Office of the Prime Minister on Monday issued a media statement saying her official vehicle was involved in an accident between Otjiwarongo and Okahandja around 13h30 on Sunday. She was uninjured. Members of her delegation that formed part of her motorcade were also unharmed.
“The prime minister managed to continue her journey on Sunday with the other vehicles in her convoy, and she arrived safely in Windhoek around 15h00,” said the statement.
Kuugongelwa-Amadhila’s official black Toyota Land Cruiser allegedly rolled twice before coming to a halt approximately 170 metres from where a side-swipe collision involving her car took place.
The vehicle was removed from the scene by Government Garage breakdown trucks from Otjiwarongo.
Namibian Police Force Otjozondjupa Regional Commander, Commissioner Heinrich Tjiveze in an interview with Nampa at the accident scene on Sunday confirmed the collision which involved three vehicles, saying it took place at about 15 kilometres south of Otjiwarongo.
It is alleged that the official vehicle which was transporting Kuugongelwa-Amadhila hit the rear right side of a 16-seater bus which was transporting four officials of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN).
The ECN officials, including the 44-year-old male driver, also survived the accident.
The prime minister’s motorcade was travelling from the direction of Otjiwarongo towards Okahandja, while the other two vehicles involved were headed in the opposite direction.
The third vehicle was being operated by tourists and they also survived.
Police investigations continue.
