The Omuthiya Town Council (OTC) has put up two water reservoirs in the town area due to the low water distribution pressure experienced in the town and to mitigate water scarcity in the region.
OTC Mayor Johannes Ndeutepo in an interview with Nampa on Tuesday said they want to increase water distribution in the town area.
“Due to water shortages we experienced in the town last year, we decided to put up some reservoirs to sustain the town at least for several days while NamWater and other sources of water supply are fixing or maintaining their pipes,” he said.
He noted that they set up a 1 100 cubic-litre reservoir in Extension 3 and 550 cubic litres in Extension 5 of the town.
“We set up these reservoirs strategically because these areas receive very low pressure of water and in most cases when we experience water scarcity they are the most affected because they do not receive any water due to a very low pressure,” Ndeutepo said.
Ndeutepo added that they erected these reservoirs with their little budget and will be looking to build other sources of water to mitigate water scarcity in the town.
“We have looked at the bigger picture of the town because the town is growing and we want to solve water challenges in the town, so we thought of constructing more reservoirs and drilling boreholes,” he said.
Ndeutepo said they strongly want to mitigate water shortages in the town by also looking at constructing a concrete reservoir that would cater to the whole town in the near future.
He also advised the residents of Omuthiya to use water sparingly and report all leakages and pipe bursts to the town council.
