The Economic and Social Justice Trust joined thousands of their fellow compatriots in expressing their condolences to late President Hage Geingob’s family and friends.
A statement issued by the trust’s trustees reads that President Geingob will always be remembered for his diplomatic skill, which he used to chair the drafting of the Namibian Constitution as well as his role in building a unified civil service after independence.
The statement notes and remembers Geingob’s commitment and interest in exploring various strategies to fight poverty. The late Head of State was elected president in 2015, at the time Namibia was 25 years into independence.
However the trust notes that at the time Geingob took office, it was clear that the triple burden of inequality, poverty and unemployment was tearing Namibians apart.
The trust continues to note that upon Geingob taking over the presidency it had become blatantly obvious that Namibia needed drastic interventions to address these challenges, sharing that they were hopeful that some critical steps would be taken by the Geingob administration.
It highlighted the increase in universal social pensions for all Namibians, by the Geingob administration.
The statement shares that the trust was encouraged by the late president’s interest in exploring various strategies to fight poverty.
The trustees expressed that they hope Geingob’s successor will honour his legacy and take further steps to fight poverty, including investing in the introduction of a universal basic income grant for all Namibians.
