Successful cancer outreach to North
The Cancer Association of Namibia last week hosted a successful northern visit as part of the annual National Cancer Outreach Programme.
More than 580 patients were screened free of charge by CAN for primarily cervical-, breast-, and prostate cancers in Ondangwa, Oshakati, Opuwo and Okongwati and Ruacana.
16 Registered Nurses of the Ministry of Health and Social Services were also complimentary trained and professionally certified by the CAN team on screening procedures.
This intervention was necessitated as the National Cancer Registry, funded and administrated by CAN, now records close to 3 700 new cancer cases annually in Namibia.
Skin cancer remains the most prevalent form of cancer in the country, while women are seemingly most affected through breast and rising cervical cancer diagnosis.
Immune-related cancer types, primarily ascribed to HIV (Kaposi’s sarcoma), are rearing its ugly head in Namibia at an alarming rate as well.
The financial investment of this most recent outreach by CAN is in excess of N$174 000.00
The Cancer Association of Namibia express profound gratitude to the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project, SPAR Namibia, Gondwana Collection, and Pascheka Group who have primarily funded the programme during the last 2 years.
