The Mobile Telecommunications company MTC will erect ten new network towers and also upgrade the existing ones in both the Kavango East and West Regions, its Corporate Communications Practitioner, John Ekongo has said.
He said this during the mobile giant’s “081 everyone” project road show held in Rundu recently.
The ten new towers will be erected in areas such as Mangetti, Khaudum National Park, Ncuncuni and Katere to make sure that people within those localities are also connected to the network, he added.
“So far, in the vicinity of Rundu, we have done upgrades on existing sites and deployed fourth-generation wireless (4G) on three sites within the Central Business District (CBD) of Rundu,” noted Ekongo.
Launched in August 2017, the MTC ‘081 everyone’ project consist of two phases, to upgrade its infrastructure and to build new network sites.
The investment would see an additional 100 000 mobile users added onto the country’s growing mobile network.
He further explained that the reason why MTC has started with the project is because it is a 100 per cent Namibian company owned by the state and its efforts is to make sure that it compliments Government’s efforts in terms of infrastructure program.
Earlier this year, MTC’s Acting Managing Director, Thinus Smit said 524 new towers will be erected countrywide and most of them will be at farms.
Meanwhile, 63 existing towers have been upgraded from 2G to 3G.
The project is estimated to cost N. dollars 1.1 billion.
