Ohorongo Cement in collaboration with Build It conducted brick-making training at Keetmanshoop on Tuesday.
The training is aimed at empowering people by transferring brick-making skills, which will translate into better housing, job creation and economic empowerment.
Thirty-two people, including six women, from all seven constituencies participated in the training.
//Kharas Governor Lucia Basson told the participants to learn as much as they can and use their newly acquired skills to become self-employed.
“It is my conviction that you will all be able to make an adequate living with your new skills while contributing to national development goals,”
Basson said.
The governor also urged the trainees to use their skills to address the lack of housing and business infrastructure in the region as she said there is such a need because towns in //Kharas are growing.
Build It’s regional operation manager, Pikkie van Vuuren told this news agency the aim of the collaboration is to empower those who are unemployed with brick-making skills so they can do something for themselves and put food on the table.
Van Vuuren said the trainees can sell the bricks to Build It, but the quality of the bricks will determine whether the company will buy it.
“The bricks should be of good quality and will be taken to a laboratory for the strength to be tested,” she said.
