It is the basic human right of every child to receive a good education, health care, food and a decent shelter to call home, which allows them to thrive in their growth and become a productive member of society.
As such, Standard Bank prides itself in ensuring that children from impoverished communities have these basic needs met through some of its Corporate Social Investments (CSI) projects. To this end, the Bank’s Katima Mulilo branch recently donated 60 mattresses to two schools in need in the Zambezi region.
“As a Bank who is part and parcel of this community, we want to show that we care by giving our future leaders, who are the learners Lisikili Combined School and Kandunda Kaseta Combined School. Understanding that Lisikili Combined School is located in a flood prone area and Kandunda Kaseta Combined School caters for the disadvantaged San community, we saw the need to put our funds together as bankers in order to make a positive difference in the lives of our learners,” Standard Bank’s Katima Mulilo Branch Manager, Smart Mwiya, said at the donation handover of the mattresses on Thursday, 26 April at Lisikili Combined School.
The branch donated 60 new mattresses to the value of N$12 000. Each school will be receiving 30 new mattresses as a result of this donation.
“Standard Bank as a good corporate citizen cares for the communities we serve, especially those who are in need of assistance. At the same time, we believe that learners have the right to receive a good education and this is just our own small way as bankers to give back to the community and more specially to our beloved school learners,” he stressed.
He added that he hoped the donation would assist in giving the youngsters a comfortable place to sleep and rest, while they pursue their academic ambitions.
At the time of the donation, Kandunda Kaseta Combined School had already closed for the school holiday, as such the learners will receive their donations once the school reopens for the second term.
“It is with this spirit of volunteerism that I would also like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank my colleagues for their immense support in doing this community project, without thinking twice to assist our learners today.
We would also like to urge all Namibians to continue supporting the young citizens of our country in which every way possible. Who knows, these could most likely be our future bank employees, future ministers, or even future presidents,” he concluded.
