Capricorn Group employees, in their role as ‘changemakers’, on Friday participated in an outreach programme to Christ’s Hope Namibia’s at Okahandja in honour of Earth Day.
Capricorn Group in a media statement on Monday said the 40 staff members “sowed seeds of positive change” by planting a vegetable garden. They carried out tasks including cleaning and clearing ground, preparing soil, planting seeds and painting tyres.
The staff planted spinach, cabbage and onions to help the centre’s feeding programme, which serves over 90 children.
This project will ensure that orphaned and vulnerable children at the centre, as well as their relatives, have access to nutritious, low-cost fruit and vegetables, Marlize Horn, Group Executive for Brand and Corporate Affairs and Executive Officer for the Capricorn Foundation, said in the statement.
“Our Changemakers came out in force to support Christ’s Hope, and we are proud of their drive to effect positive change,” she added.
Christ’s Hope International Namibia’s Country Team Leader, Hannelie Turner, stated that the organisation has a 17-year track record of caring for orphaned and vulnerable children. It offers long-term support at 10 care points in Keetmanshoop, Rehoboth, Okahandja and Oshikuku to help children break the cycle of Aids and poverty.
“The Changemakers’ contribution can ensure a long-term and sustainable influence on them, their surrounding communities, and our natural environment,” she said.
Turner said nearby households with no income have been identified to participate in order to maintain the garden and benefit from the products.
