Team Namibia added eight more medals to their tally on day two of the South Africa Sport Association for the Physically Disabled (SASAPD) championship underway in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Namibian athletes with disabilities raked in 14 medals on the opening day of the SASAPD on Sunday, while Monday saw them win an additional eight medals to bring their tally to 22 medals after two days of competition.
Twenty Namibian athletes are competing in the 60th edition of the Toyota SASAPD championships at the Germiston Stadium along with countries like Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Cameroon and Botswana, as well as nine South African provinces.
On Monday, Namibian athletes won four gold, two silver and two bronze in the 200-metre (m) sprints and discuss throw.
T12 athlete Michael Muyenga won his second medal at the champion in the 200m sprint. Muyenga won a gold medal after completing the 200m race in a time of 24.97 seconds. His first medal at the championship was another gold in the long jump on Sunday.
T37 athlete Petrus Karuli, who won a silver medal on Sunday, this time around added gold to Namibia’s tally in the 200m sprint, which saw T35, T36 and T37 athletes compete against each other. Karuli posted a time of 25.98 seconds to win himself a gold medal.
The mixed wheelchair race also saw Namibian athletes winning medals in the 1 500m event. Nico Kharuxab won a silver medal, while Roodley Gowaseb collected a bronze despite clocking the fastest time. Due to the Raza point system, his time was not close enough to the world record for a gold medal.
The F37/38 discus men’s event saw Simon Shihepo winning a silver medal with a throw of 28.70m, while in the shot-put category he finished fourth after throwing a distance of 7.13m.
Namibia’s female sprinters Lahja Ipinge (T12) and Lize Meyer (T46) won Namibia’s gold medals in their respective categories during their 200m sprint, while T37 sprinter Johanna Benson won a bronze in the 200m.
Athletes that missed out on medals are Fillipus Namwenda, who was disqualified in the T12 200m sprint, while Lahja Ishitile won the combined T11/13/47 and T64 category 200m sprint but the Raza system scored her lower than other athletes from different categories.
F57 shot-put athlete Johanna Hamukoto finished fifth with a throw of 4.55m, with Arlette Mawe Fokoa of Cameron winning the event with a throw of 8.72m.
