The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and NamPower have come out to support the MTC Knockout Project against homelessness by pledging N.dollars 50 000 each towards their chosen personalities. This is the second edition of the mobile operator’s Knockout Project, which aims to fight homelessness this year.
Thirty well-known local personalities have been chosen to perform at a music concert scheduled for 03 October 2020 at the National Theatre of Namibia where MTC is hoping to raise N.dollars 1.5 million through the event.
This is the second edition of the Knockout Project, a charity event in the format of a peer music concert, pairing imminent personalities to perform as their favourite local Namibian musicians, and it is set to address and amplify discourse around homelessness while raising funds for the cause.
Speaking at the announcement of their sponsorship on Tuesday, UNFPA representative Dennia Gayle said countries can only develop if they protect their human capital.
“Development becomes pointless if we do not protect our human capital. It is our human capital who can build this country, and they should not be homeless,’’ said Gayle.
NamPower Managing Director Kahengo Simson added that the pandemic is exacerbating the situation and it will require collaborations from corporate Namibia to curb the plight of homelessness.
“Some of our citizens facing homelessness are hard hit especially by the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus pandemic. Many who have already been living with financial pressures are at serious risk of being pushed over the brink if we as corporates do not provide the necessary support,” Simson noted.
UNFPA pledged N.dollars 50 000 towards Emma Theofelus, Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology while NamPower Pledged another N.dollars 50 000 without endorsing a specific personality.
Members of the public can watch the show live online at a cost of N.dollars 50 or at the theatre for N.dollars 500.
