The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has donated supplies to the Ministry of Health and Social Services to support Namibia in its efforts to fight COVID-19.
A statement issued on Monday said the supplies include four Infrared thermo-guns, a 55-inch television screen, 18 400 single-use hand gloves, 10 litres of surface disinfectant, 20 litres of hand sanitiser and 100 litres of soap.
UNDP deputy resident representative Alexis Armstrong said they are thankful for the opportunity to support frontline workers.
“This contribution today is a small indication of our commitment to ensure that these frontline workers are equipped to consistently track the pandemic as they execute the various responsibilities at the emergency operating centre,” Armstrong was quoted as saying in the statement.
He said the UNDP hopes the supplies will go a long way in keeping the staff of the COVID-19 emergency operating centre safe and capacitated to serve Namibians.
“The Ministry of Health and Social Services has done a wonderful job in setting up the emergency operating centre that keeps the nation informed on the COVID-19 developments in Namibia. This donation will help to keep the EOC operations going and at the same time, help the EOC staff stay protected against the COVID-19 pandemic in Namibia,” he said.
Armstrong also noted that the UNDP is implementing a project to address the needs of the informal settlements. The project includes providing access to information about COVID-19, production and installation of tippy taps to ameliorate health and hygiene deficiencies and the training and deployment of 200 volunteers to support these communities in identifying and addressing needs related to the pandemic.
