The Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) will be sending eight people to Tokyo, Japan, to watch the Rugby World Cup encounter between Namibia and New Zealand on Sunday.
The group, which is set to depart from Windhoek on Wednesday and return on
09 October, will also have a meet and greet session with the Namibian rugby squad beforehand.
During the media conference on Tuesday, MTC’s Chief Human Capital and Corporate Affairs Officer, Tim Ekandjo suggested jokingly that the national rugby team’s losing streak at the world cup is a result of the low support and turn-out and therefore MTC is sending four winners and their partners as reinforcement to the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan to amend this.
“Hopefully, your presence will make a big difference when they see a big contingent of Namibians coming to support the team,” Ekandjo said.
Namibia lost their first two matches at the 2019 Rugby World Cup, to Italy by 47-22 as well as by 57-03 to South Africa (SA).
The winners are Toivo Witbooi from Keetmanshoop, along with his younger brother Lesley; Robanus Amadhila from Ondangwa with his wife Julia; Betuel Nuuyoma from Walvisbay with his friend Sakeus Shaanika; and Cornelia du Toit from Otjiwarongo with her daughter Michelle.
Nuuyoma said he is not only excited to watch the tough match but to experience the Japanese culture, while Amadilha is ready to spend the week with his wife.
Witbooi and Du Toit, who are first time travellers, said they will enjoy the flying experience along with meeting the team the most.
