Capricorn Group Executive Management and employees proved, once again, that they are connectors of positive change, when they took 22 vulnerable children from the Family of Hope Services, a small school in Havana, Katutura for an outing to the Haven Zoo in Kleine Kuppe and shared the spirit of the Festive Season by handing out specially selected Christmas presents.
The group of Changemakers from Capricorn Group, who has been an avid supporter of the Family of Hope Services School in the past, realised that, in the run-up to the festive season, these children have nothing but a dream in their hearts of what Christmas is supposed to be. That is when they decided to step in. The children were asked to express their desired gifts on a video recording and the executive leadership each selected the child/children whom they wanted to buy the chosen gift items for. The majority of the requests were not fanciful but essential things that most children take for granted. The example set by the leadership encouraged many Capricorn Group employees to join in the spirit of giving and share a day with the children at the Zoo, where they received lots of affection and their personalised gifts. “As Capricorn Group, we are continuously looking for opportunities to be connectors of positive change in our communities and to provide a platform for our employees to make a difference in the lives of others”
Weekly activities at the Family of Hope Services school include a remedial school program for 22 children (age 7-14) who have never been in school, and a weekday feeding scheme for 260 children. The Family of Hope Services also acts as a community center where afterschool activities are hosted for children from the community. Capricorn Group has collaborated with Imago Dei, a registered non-profit welfare organisation, on this project to contribute to educational sector and the development of the girl and boy child. This is in line with the United Nations (UN) goal to meet the basic needs of children and expand their opportunities to reach their full potential, according to the 2030 agenda for children.
Capricorn Group employees are taking their role as Changemakers very seriously. Every time they act as a Changemaker in the community, they prove that with a relatively small amount of effort they can create a ripple effect in our communities and ignite positive change in people’s lives, in this case the lives of our future leaders.
“It was a heartwarming experience for me seeing the overwhelming joy shared between the kids. Our giving was nothing compared to the immense satisfaction and fulfilment we received from them. This is how we support our brand promise of being Connectors of Positive Change, by planting seeds that will grow into sustainable change. I will most certainly give my time and energy again in support of something that is making a difference”, said Marlize Horn, Group Executive: Brand & Corporate Affairs.
