Four Namibia Premier League (NPL) clubs will this weekend compete in a pre-season tournament aimed at raising funds for the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN).
The University of Namibia (UNAM) have organised a one-day competition that will see their squad (UNAM FC), African Stars, Black Africa and Mighty Gunners fighting it out for top honours amongst each other.
Speaking to Nampa on Monday, UNAM FC coach, Ronny Kanalelo said apart from raising funds for CAN, the pre-season tournament will be used by the four teams to assess the type of improvements they need to make ahead of the
2018/19 NPL season.
“As a team, UNAM FC has been in training for the last three months and we want to see how ready we are for the new season,” he said.
Kanalelo added that they choose to donate the funds from the gate takings to CAN because it’s an organisation that is fighting for a cause that affects every Namibian.
The matches will kick off on Saturday morning at the UNAM Sports field with UNAM FC taking on African Stars while Mighty Gunners will play Black Africa thereafter.
The winners of those opening matches will then meet each other in the final that will be played on the same day.
The 2018/19 season is scheduled to kick off on 15 October 2018.
