The third and last event of the year of the annual Tangeni Nakale Athletics Kids Fun Run was hailed a success on Saturday morning after more than 50 kids took part in the event.
The event which was initiated in March 2015 by Tangeni Nakale, a former long-distance athlete, took place at the Okuryangava informal settlement in the capital and was aimed at encouraging young people to participate in sport while also providing a platform for promising athletes to be identified.
On Saturday young athletes between the ages of seven and 17 competed in the two and five kilometre (5km) run at an open space along Gaddafi Street.
Nakale told this news agency on Saturday that he was happy to see athletes from the leader’s community foundation participating in the last fun run of the year.
“This event is still growing but we need sponsors who can make it better.
Credit should be given to our loyal sponsors Marathon Sugar who this year sponsored us with 30 tracksuits and t-shirts that were given to our athletes to wear in this cold weather,” he said.
Jesaya Haulumbu, Barnabas Mushenge and Ananias Imbili finished in the first three positions of the boy’s 5km fun run, while Maggie Matias, Jessica Classen and Rauna Johannes took top honours in the girls’ category.
