The City of Windhoek (CoW) in collaboration with Olof Palme Primary School on Wednesday donated bags of fresh produced corn and spinach to 40 learners and 60 community members in the capital.
The school is situated in Greenwell Matongo residential area.
The corns and spinach come from a garden which was inaugurated by the two parties in September last year and is situated behind the school.
The school’s principal Julia Hangula told Nampa on the sidelines that the garden provides an opportunity for learners and community members to cultivate their own food.
“The garden will teach learners valuable gardening and agriculture concepts and skills,” she said.
On his part, CoW Head of Social Youth Development Division, James Kalundu stated that this is the third donation from the garden since its inception.
The City, he added, is in the process of developing a second community garden by Okokuna farm, plot 3192 at 9000 hectares.
“The farm will be involved in both livestock and gardening, and a training centre to all community members that are interested in learning agricultural kills,” Kalundu said.
He concluded that after enough members have been trained, they will be appointed as the managing team of the farm.
