The 2018 Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project for 2018 kicked off on Monday, 2 July 2018 in Windhoek. Now in its 18th year, the project has raised more than N$20 million in aid of cancer patients since its inception. In 2017, Namibians donated a record N$3 million towards the work of the Cancer Association of Namibia.
Between 3 000 and 4 000 Namibians are newly diagnosed with cancer every year. Therefore, it is the aim of the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project to create awareness on the disease and to show people living with cancer that there is hope for recovery.
The funds generated by the project will, amongst others, be used to enable the Cancer Association of Namibia to host clinics around the country where Namibians can get tested for cancer and find information on treatment and social support.
The Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project continues to be the biggest national fundraising project in the country, and its success is largely dependent on the support and efforts of the Bank Windhoek branches, departments, companies, the public and schools across the country.
Every year the project continues to be welcomed with passion and enthusiasm. This enables the Bank’s employees to be connectors of positive change in Namibia. From Monday, 2 July to Tuesday, 31 July 2018, Bank Windhoek’s branches will be turned into apple grocers and employees will start selling apples at N$5 each. The Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project’s activities also include school sales and an Entrepreneurial Challenge. During the Entrepreneurial Challenge branches and the various support service departments in the Bank embark on various fundraising initiatives to raise extra money towards the project.
“We get numerous requests from people who want to contribute towards the project, but they do not want to buy apples. To enable them to do this, Bank Windhoek has introduced two ways to do this. The first one is aimed at Bank Windhoek clients who can use any of the Bank’s electronic channels to make a donation. If you go onto the Mobile App or Internet Banking, the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project is listed as a beneficiary under Third Party Payments,” said Bank Windhoek’s Communication Practitioner for Sponsorships and Events, Suzette January, who is taking the lead on the project.
“To accommodate non-clients, Bank Windhoek has partnered with PayToday and the GiveToday website to offer another platform for donations. Supporters of the project can download the PayToday app from the Apple Store or Google Play Store and complete the short registration process and will find the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project listed under the Business Payment Section,” January said.

Schools will remain one of the biggest focal points of the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project, and learners throughout Namibia will support the project by selling apples through their schools.
To encourage schools to take part, Bank Windhoek will give prize money to the school in each different category, namely Pre-Primary, Primary, Secondary and Combined who sells the most apples per learner. Cash to the amount of N$7 000 for first place, N$5 000 for second place and N$3 000 for third place will be handed over in November, when the winners of the competition will be announced. Moreover, Maerua SuperSpar will give vouchers to the value of N$5 000 to the four winning schools to buy stationary.
