Ohorongo Cement is constructing a N. dollars 2.1 million sports complex at Otavi.
The facility, co-sponsored by Dundee Precious Metals and Agra Namibia, comprises a netball, volleyball and basketball court.
The project coordinator who is coordinating the construction on behalf of the Ohorongo-Otavi Community Trust (OOCT), Rudolph Coetzee told journalists during a site tour on Wednesday another sponsor will build ablution facilities, a pavilion and dining rooms at a cost of N.dollars
500 000.
This brings the total cost to N. dollars 2.6 million.
“There are no funds going to third parties, all the funds are going directly to the contractors, GI Construction, who is doing all the construction work,” he said.
The project commenced in February this year and will be completed by the end of April.
Plans for the construction of the sports complex commenced in 2011, but due to a number of reasons, this did not happen.
Initially, Ohorongo would only avail the funds and the town council had to take responsibility for constructing the sports complex, but this did not happen.
Once the project is completed, it will be handed over to the Otavi Town Council who then will maintain it.
Coetzee said discussions are underway to determine how the town council will maintain the complex, such as using gate fees for maintenance costs.
Established in 2009, the OOCT aims to uplift communities and contribute to the general growth and development of Namibia.
