Ninety-two swimmers took part in the Fifth Bank Windhoek Long Course Gala and the aqua pentathlon, which was held over the weekend at the Olympia Municipal Swimming Pool in Windhoek.
The two-day event was a closing curtain for the Long Course Season hosted by the Namibia Swimming Union (NASU).
Despite the cold temperatures, both in and out of the water, swimmers were ready and prepared to compete in 782 events.
Suné Weber achieved the highest International Swimming Federation (FINA) points for a single swim in the 50 metre freestyle girls under 17 to 18 event with a time of 28.70 seconds, scoring 565 FINA points.
Weber also scored the second highest points with her swim in the 50 metre backstroke with a time of 33.52 seconds with a score of 526 FINA points.
Corné le Roux scooped up the third spot in the 200 metre freestyle for boys under 15 to 16 with a time of 2:07.20 seconds and a score of 515 FINA points.
On Saturday, the Aqua Pentathlon started off with perfect swimming weather and swimmers competed for first, second and third places. In this event swimmers are required to swim all five strokes; 100 m each of backstroke, freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly and a 200 individual medley. The fastest accumulated times for the five events per swimmer determines the winner of each age group. The age groups were 8 and under, 9 to 10, 11 to 12, 13 to 14, 15 to 16, 17 to 18 and 19 and over.
The Ludorum winners were:
Junior Victor Ludorum (all ages up to 12) – Jose Canjulo;
Junior Victrix Ludorum (all ages up to 12) – Ariana Naukosho;
Senior Victor Ludorum (all ages over 13) – Mikah Burger; and
Senior Victrix Ludorum (all ages over 13) – Viktoria Ellmies
Swimmers from five clubs, namely Aqua Swimming Club, Dolphins Swimming Club, Marlins, Namib Swimming Academy and Swakopmund Swimming Club, participated in both the long course gala and the aqua pentathlon.
“As with previous years, the long course season would not be possible without the financial assistance of Bank Windhoek. We appreciate the Bank’s support,” said NASU’s Media Liaison Officer, Jurie Badenhorst.
Next on the swimming calendar is the short course season that is scheduled to take place on Friday, 15 and Saturday, 16 June 2018.
