Thirty security guards graduated with certificates from the Tamahuke Security College here over the weekend after a four-week basic training course.
The guards were trained in aspects of basic foot drills, basic security, handcuffing, radio use and self-defence.
Speaking at the ceremony, Namibian Police Kavango East Regional Commander, Commissioner Johanna Ngondo said security guards help their employers protect property and other interests, while also supplementing the crime detection efforts of law enforcement agencies.
“In your discharge of duties, you will be exposed to dangers, threats, criticisms and name calling. You are patriotic, as you work on discomfort for other’s comfort,” Ngondo said.
Security work, she said, is essential within every society, however many of the people undermine the importance of the job.
“The assumption is that the job of a security guard is very simple and an effortless one.”
The regional commander said many security guards generally do not get themselves the proper and required training, which is a must for this kind of job.
According to her, a guard who is well trained and motivated will display better performance at work than those not trained.
She urged them to refrain from unethical behaviour that will jeopardise the integrity of their work.
“Rather deliver your services with honesty, transparency, commitment and dedication, guided by two basic values which are loyalty and integrity,” Ngondo stressed.
The privately-owned Tamahuke Security College opened its doors in 2015 and has centres in Windhoek and Rundu. The college started with its first intake of 109 trainees in Windhoek and 21 in the Kavango East Region in 2017. Security guards pay for the courses themselves or through their companies.
The basic course cost N.dollars 1 000 plus a N.dollars 200 registration fee.
