Harare, February 27, 2018 (New Ziana) – The United Nations system in Zimbabwe is geared to support the new administration and is exploring ways to deepen cooperation to achieve set development targets, a senior official said on Tuesday.
UN resident coordinator, Bishow Parajuli told journalists after meeting with Vice President Kembo Mohadi that the organisation was geared to assist Zimbabwe achieve its development objectives.
“In response to the new dispensation we have been looking into various areas to revamp our support to the government in looking at a new way of prioritizing UN work and support the new dispensation,” Parajuli said.
Zimbabwe went through leadership changes last November when a new administration led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa took over from that of former President Robert Mugabe.
The UN system had in the past been working with the then government under the auspices of the Zimbabwe United Nations Development Assistance Framework under which needs in various priority areas were addressed.
The areas include poverty reduction, social services, governance, gender and HIV.
“We briefed him on the work the UN system is doing in Zimbabwe and also on the future areas of cooperation that we will be working on and we specifically talked about the area that the Vice President is covering, the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC),” said Parajuli.
He said through its experiences gained from dealing with similar circumstances, the UN system would aid Zimbabwe’s peace and reconciliation processes.
The NPRC is currently conducting hearings across the country, gathering public opinion on ways to address divisions and conflict.
VP Mohadi appreciated the work that the UN agencies have been doing to support government development efforts especially targeting priority areas.
“We discussed about peace. They are assisting us in the NPRC. We exchanged ideas on how to do it and how to achieve success,” he said.
