The Chinese government has donated N.dollars300 000 to the University of Namibia (UNAM) in support of its science research activities.
Speaking at the handover ceremony here on Tuesday, the Ambassador of China to Namibia, Zhang Yiming said China is willing to actively support the university’s research work to promote development through science and innovation.
“Innovation is an inexhaustible source of human progress and a powerful driving force for the development of a country, therefore Unam as the top academic institution has the responsibility to drive development through science research and production learning integration,” said Yiming.
Accepting the handover, UNAM’s Vice Chancellor, Lazarus Hangula, said the university has grown into a comprehensive academic and research institution offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes as well as undertaking research, innovation and development.
Speaking at the same occasion, senior lecturer in the department of chemistry and bio-chemistry at the university, Veikko Uahengo, explained that the Faculty of Science is currently undertaking research on renewable energy with the aim of utilizing local natural resources such as coper and zinc by converting them into solar thin-films that capture sunlight and transforms it into electricity.
