The Motor Accident Vehicle Fund (MVA) on Monday handed over toilets it constructed for 14 people with disabilities in Windhoek’s 7de Laan settlement.
MVA Chief Executive Officer, Rosalia Martins-Hausiku said during the handing over this is the institution’s way of diverting its assistance from only focusing on vehicle accident victims to other areas of the community, such as people living with disabilities.
The toilets were built near the beneficiaries’ shacks. This means they will no longer have to walk long distances to use communal toilets, which could be dangerous at night.
Sebastian Mutuku Kudumo, who is visually impaired, thanked the MVA.
“It has always been a challenge for us to go to the toilet, especially at night,” Kudumo said.
He said his shack is situated near an area which is notorious for being frequented by criminals.
Speaking at the same event was Windhoek Mayor Muesee Kazapua, who said the provision of ablution facilities and proper sewerage systems is one of the main challenges regional and local authorities face.
Kazapua urged other institutions to assist the City of Windhoek in providing these basic services to residents as part of their contribution to the Harambee Prosperity Plan.
