Windhoek, Khomas Region. On the 26th of September, the “Brown Paper Bag” Universities Tourism Debate was hosted at the NUST Hotel School. The event in its entirety was sponsored by B2Gold Namibia.
The three most prominent Namibian tertiary institutions participated in the event, namely the Namibia University of Science & Technology (NUST), the International University of Management (IUM) and the University of Namibia (UNAM). The student teams had to debate the importance of conservation and tourism and the associated opportunities in the communal conservancy tourism sector. The IUM team claimed victory – receiving the floating trophy and tablets as first prize.
The debating event formed part of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism World Tourism Day celebrations. Namibia as a member state of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation joins other countries in commemorating World Tourism Day. The theme for the year is “Sustainable Tourism – a Tool for Development”.
Mark Dawe, Country Manager and Managing Director of B2Gold Namibia, complimented the Ministry on its continuous efforts to marry the sectors of tourism and conservation: “B2Gold Namibia is a leader in the sphere of sustainability. Conservation and tourism have to go hand in hand if we are to find sustainable solutions for our country – and we are in full support of the MET’s efforts in this regard.”
