Deeper Young Adults Namibia (DYA), under the leadership of Deeper Fellowship Church Namibia (DFC), will host its first university student bash in Windhoek on Saturday.
In an interview with Nampa on Thursday, DYA representative Uuendy Kandanga said the event will be a friendly, Christ-centred youth welcoming bash for students, especially first-year students, to support them in their
introduction to university. “The start of university can be scary and many find it difficult. The event is being held to make especially first years feel welcome,” Kandanga said.
In an interview with Nampa, Namibia University of Science and Technology student social worker, Lizelle Miller, said most first year students go through a rollercoaster of emotions and it can be a scary feeling being
away from home, especially if they have come from a rural area to the
city. “First years can experience emotions like confusion and frustration as they might feel lost and not know what the future has in store for them. They might feel sadness and loss as they might be missing their family and
friends from home,” Miller said. She added that most first-years do not know how to choose their friends wisely and need to keep in mind that not everyone they meet is their friend and that not everyone has good intentions.
“You should choose your friends wisely as there can either be a positive or a negative influence and you need to choose friends that will support you and not distract you from your studies,” she said.
Agreeing with the sentiments shared by Miller, DYA youth pastor Rudiger Bampton said the activities lined up for the student bash include praise and worship music, as well as discussions where students share their
academic journeys. “Advice will be given on university life with topics such as how to stay focused on your studies,” Bampton said.
