Muafangejo, the solitary, exotic figure who stood his ground, self-assured in his art and guided by his belief that all human beings are equal before God.

John Ndevasia Muafangejo (1943 – 1987), Namibia’s most acclaimed artist, gained recognition through the Anglican Church, and later the Arts Association of Namibia (AAN), supporting the artist-activist in hosting exhibitions of his works, including him in international biennales and art competitions, unheard of during the Apartheid era.

In 1988 shortly after his death the John Muafangejo Art Centre (JMAC) was established, through key agents such as the AAN, to engage artists and activists to stand up for the liberation of the Namibian people.

JMAC, in partnership with the Namibian Arts Association, Muafangejo Season 2018 opens with an exhibition containing the heritage collection of over 100 works of the late “artivist” currently stored at the National Art Gallery of Namibia.  The official opening, with welcoming words by Nangula Nanyemba, will take place on 15 October 2018 at 6PM at the Franco Namibian Cultural Centre.  The exhibition of Muafangejo’s works will be up at the FNCC until 26 October 2018.

On 18 October 2018 a panel discussion on activism and an analysis of Muafangejo’s art will take place at the FNCC.

As well, three printmaking workshops will take place on 20, 23 and 25 October 2018 and throughout the week, live dance, poetry and film screenings will take place as well.

A full list of all the events are found on the Muafangejo Season poster..

All are welcome to attend the events, as well as the final event to close Muafangejo Season 2018 @FNCC – an open mic jam session on 25 October 2018 at 6PM.
